With the passing of Nelson Mandela, I was reminded of his accomplishments over his life. As time had passed, I had forgotten that he had been held in jail for a full 27 years, and that upon his release he was able to lead his country away from race riots. He was the first democratically elected President. His story is so inspiring to me, and makes me want to be a better criminal lawyer, to defend my client’s rights against the Crown, and to fight for their rights against all the odds stacked in the prosecution’s favor.
Many people charged with a criminal offence feel intimidated and afraid of the process. It is very stressful to be accused of a crime, and have to face the vast resources the police and prosecution use to advance their case. This is where I can help, along with my partner T. E. La Liberté, Q.C.
Nelson Mandela’s death has reminded me to bring my compassion for my clients into the Courtroom and to stand up bravely against the state in order to ensure my clients are treated fairly. He has reminded me to be creative in fighting for my client’s rights, and to argue for those rights in new ways, even if they have not previously been considered by the Court. Whether my client is charged with aggravated assault, simple assault, theft, sexual assault, kidnapping, unlawful confinement, possession of drugs, trafficking in drugs, murder, manslaughter or any other offence, I will stand by my client with a renewed strength of conviction to ensure my client is treated fairly and receives the best result. I will do that in honor of the memory of Nelson Mandela, as he inspires me to want to be a better person, and importantly, a better lawyer. I shall do my best to rise to the occasion.
